THE HISTORY
Established in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest and most storied farms in the Franschhoek Valley. Its name, meaning "ravine of the Boekenhout," honors the indigenous Cape Beech tree once highly prized for fine furniture making—a heritage symbolized by the seven chairs featured on the winery's iconic labels. While its roots run deep into the 18th century, the winery’s modern renaissance began in 1993 when the estate was restored and a new planting program was introduced. Under the visionary guidance of Marc Kent, Boekenhoutskloof has evolved into a global benchmark for South African wine, seamlessly blending centuries of tradition with a pioneering spirit that has produced world-renowned labels like The Chocolate Block.
THE TERROIR
Tucked into the furthest corner of the Franschhoek Valley, the terroir of Boekenhoutskloof is a masterful study in geographical diversity. The estate's vineyards are defined by a complex mix of alluvial soils, weathered granite, and clay, sheltered by the dramatic mountain slopes that provide a cooling influence and unique microclimates. Beyond Franschhoek, the winery famously sources exceptional fruit from the rugged, schist-rich soils of Swartland, particularly for its legendary Syrah. This "tenacity for life" is evident in every vine, which must withstand the Cape’s shifting elements to produce grapes of intense concentration and mineral depth. From the elegant, textured Sémillon to the bold, peppery scarlet of their mountain-grown reds, the wines are a pure reflection of South Africa’s wild yet refined landscape.
